The Principle of Personal Responsibility
There are many traps in modern culture that if we allow them to will take away our personal responsibility and turn us into helpless victims. Disease vs. health and wellness is just one example. Personal responsibility is a guiding principle in life. It opens us up to see things in their true light. It brings us self-respect, integrity, and a sense of that which seems out of our control is actually under our personal control. Personal responsibility removes our childish conceptions of being omnipotent, and at the same time shows how unrealistic it is to believe that we are life’s passive victims. Personal responsibility is vital to our optimal health and well being.

Habit of Finishing Strong!

You often hear in class..."Last set - Best Set!" Or you may hear...

"Last Round - Best Round!"

Both used to anchor the mind set and the Habit of Finishing Strong.

Experts in Peak Performance remind us that high levels of success and achievement in any endeavor is 20% mechanics and 80% psychological.

Simply meaning that once you've mastered the fundamental skills you
need to succeed, you've got to invest daily in psyching yourself up to
take massive action. That's where the Habit of Finishing Strong comes in.

Making sure that you end each day in a Kick Butt way.

Think opposites, imagine being in the habit of finishing weak.

Everyday you finished your day in a lazy, low or no results way. Aiming
for just Okay and accepting mediocrity from yourself by performing way
below your true potential.

Would that excite you?

Would that be the way to bring excellence into your life? NOT!

By conditioning yourself with the Habit of Finishing Strong to each day, week, month and year...you add one more excellent habit to your life.

As the end of the year grows closer...it's a great habit to visit and an excellent mind set to apply to the remaining days and weeks of 2009.

Good luck and Finish Strong!

*************************************************************
Health & Fitness Tip: Safe...Fit & Focused!

Tied in with the habit of finishing strong, our health and fitness tip for
the last few weeks of 2009, is to finish your year safe, fit and focused.

During the Holiday Season, many people tend to overdo their partying,
eating, drinking and spending. The average person gains over 10 lbs.
during this wonderful time of year.

You can bet that isn't 10 lbs. of lean muscle mass :)

Our encouragement and hope for you and all of our students, is that you
stay safe from the dangers of drunk drivers and/or criminal elements that
do occur during this time of year.

Along with staying fit and focused on enjoying the Holidays with a bit of self control in your fun factor and your spending habits as well. It's such
a great time of year and we wish you and your family the best ever.

Happy Holidays!

Coconut Oil Beats Brushing, Flossing, and Mouthwash

Dental Health with Oil Swishing

By Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D.
Good news! You can now say "good-bye" to tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, loose teeth, and bleeding and receding gums, and say "hello" to a bright white smile and healthy pink gums. How is this possible? With coconut oil!

Believe it or not, a spoonful of coconut oil can clean your teeth more thoroughly than brushing, flossing, and gargling with antiseptic mouthwash. In addition, it will help prevent tooth decay better than fluoride, without the toxic side effects.

Some people brush their teeth using coconut oil, but I'm not talking about using coconut oil as a replacement for toothpaste. I'm talking about a whole new way to keep your teeth white and your breath fresh, and prevent tooth decay and gum disease. The method I'm referring to is called oil pulling. Never heard of it? Well, it's about time you had.…

If you follow the suggestions [in this article], when you reach the age of 65, or 75, or even 105, you will continue to enjoy eating the foods you love using all of the teeth you currently have. If you teach these principles to your children, they will buck the trend in dental health and grow to adulthood retaining all their teeth, just as nature intended.…

Habit of Positive Self Control

Besides being creatures of habit, we are all emotional beings.

Most of the actions you do or don’t take is based on your emotions.

The key is to learn to control your emotions so they don’t control you.

Another huge benefit you’ll see from your Martial Arts training is that you develop
Positive Self Control over your emotions. You begin to understand more ways that
you can influence your emotions, putting you in the driver seat.

If you’ve ever lost control of your emotions, this usually means you got really mad,
sad or allowed your emotions to be in the driver’s seat of what you said or did.

With training and practice, you can and will gain control over your emotions and this
will allow you to excel in your training and your life.

What you focus on the most can have a positive or a negative impact on your thoughts
and emotions. The more you direct your focus and thinking patterns, the better control
you will have over your emotions.

Thoughts lead to feelings, your feelings lead to your actions...
and your actions always determine your results.

Improve your thinking and you will improve your life!

Health & Fitness Tip: Reward-Recharge-Renew!

Anytime you achieve a specific fitness goal, big or small, you should
reward yourself, recharge your batteries and renew your goal.

Reward - It's very important to recognize and reward good performance,
especially when it's your own. Most people reward themselves when they
achieve a big goal, such as a belt or hitting a certain body weight, etc...

You may also considering rewarding yourself for completion of a great
class or an excellent workout. Reward can vary from a special dinner to
a trip to the book store or whatever reward you feel fits the achievement.

Recharge - Recharging your batteries. When you finish a great workout
or achieve a big goal, it's time to recharge your battery. Combination of
rest, re-hydration and replenishing your system with healthy nutrition.

Proper rest and recharge is vital to your progress and should be planned
into your training strategy. You work hard, train hard and push yourself
to the next level and it's important to allow yourself sufficient rest to
make sure your batteries are fully recharged.

Renew - Renewing your goals insures that you'll see consistent progress
and that you'll continually move forward in your health and fitness goals.

Like any area of life that you wish to excel in, you must always have a
goal in your training. Without a goal, you'll lose your desire and reasons
for taking your skills and conditioning to the next level. Always renew
yourself and your goals.

With that said, I am going to get to bed early and get a great full night's sleep.

Habit of Positive Self Development

Also known as P/S/D, or Personal Self Development. It's been said that anyone that doesn't read is no better off than someone that can't read.

One of the many benefits people enjoy about studying the Martial Arts, is that it
teaches them to be a great student again. For anyone still in school, it teaches them
to become a better student.

Anytime you read, listen or watch something inspirational, educational and relevant
to your life's progress and growth plan, it peaks your interest level. It also enhances
your confidence and acts as an accelerant to your overall success and achievement.

"Over the long haul, superior performance depends on superior learning!"
                                                                                                          ~ Peter Senge

The average person stops formal learning once they leave school. Don't allow yourself to
be average in anyway Keep yourself on the path of a Kaizen Warrior. Champions are
always on the quest for greater knowledge and useful information.

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

The most successful people in the World are the ones that are always learning, always growing and improving their mind, body and spirit. You grow and improve by gaining useful
knowledge and taking action on the ideas and information that is relevant.

The richest soil, if left uncultivated, produces the rankest weeds. Simply meaning that your
mind is a rich soil that must be cultivated or it will rot and waste away. Be pro-active with
your learning and develop the Habit of Positive Self Development.

Health & Fitness Tip: Peak -vs- Weak

Would you rather be a Peak Performer or a Weak Performer?

Ignore your fitness and conditioning. Drink alcohol like a thirsty man in the desert.

Eat fast food and plenty of it. Make junk food your primary source of nutrition and load
up on the sugars, salts, fried foods and pile on the butter, creamy sauces and take in massive amounts of high fat mayo too:)

That's the formula for becoming a Weak Performer in life. A rather large one at that!

Want to be a Peak Performer?

Pretty much do the opposite of the previous rant you just read. Chances are good you
can find plenty of company for the Weak Performers Club. Why do I say that?

Because you can witness it anytime you want by going to your local market for some good
old fashioned people watching.

I don't say this to mean or prejudice, just the truth based on my own observations.

Step outside the world we live in and you're likely to see plenty more examples of an out of shape
lifestyle than you will the Martial Arts Fit-for-Life crowd we are surrounded by everyday.

However, when I step outside of my "Bubble World", it's very apparent that we, the Martial Arts Fit-for-Life crowd, need to influence more people to join us at the dojo.

These Health & Fitness Tips are aimed at those of us that want to be a Peak Performer instead of a Weak Performer. Train hard, train smart and fill your mind and body with the best fuel you can afford. That's the formula to become a consistent Peak Performer in Life.

Resentment is the experience of a negative emotion (anger or hatred, for instance) felt as a result of a real or imagined wrong done.
Resentment Is a Way That Fails

Resentment Creates an Inferior Self-Image even when based on real injustices and wrongs is not the way to win. It soon becomes an emotional habit. Habitually feeling that you are a victim of injustice, you begin to picture yourself in the role of a victimized person. You carry around an inner feeling that is looking for an external peg to hang itself on. It is then easy to see "evidence" of injustice, or fancy you have been wronged, in the most innocent remark or neutral circumstance.

Habitual resentment invariably leads to self-pity, which is the worst possible emotional habit anyone can develop. When these habits have become firmly ensconced, a person does not feel "right" or "natural" when they are absent. They then literally begin to search for and look for "injustices." Someone has said that such people feel good only when they are miserable.
Emotional habits of resentment and self-pity also go with an ineffective, inferior self-image. You begin to picture yourself as a pitiful person, a victim, who was meant to be unhappy.
The Real Cause of Resentment. Remember that your resentment is not caused by other persons, events, or circumstances. It is caused by your own emotional response, your own reaction. You alone have power over this, and you can control it if you firmly convince yourself that resentment and self-pity are not ways to happiness and success,
but ways to defeat and unhappiness.
As long as you harbor resentment, it is literally impossible for you to picture yourself as a self-reliant, independent, self-determining person who is "the Captain of his soul, the master of his Fate."The resentful person turns over his reins to other people. They are allowed to dictate how he shall feel, how he shall act. He is wholly dependent on other people, just as a beggar is. He makes unreasonable demands and claims on other people. If everyone else should be dedicated to making you happy, you will be resentful when it doesn't work out that way. If you feel that other people "owe" you eternal gratitude, undying appreciation, or continual recognition of your superlative worth, you will feel resentment when these debts are not paid. If life owes you
a living, you become resentful when it isn't forthcoming.
Resentment is therefore inconsistent with creative goal-striving. In creative goal-striving you are the creator, not the passive recipient. You set your goals. No one owes you anything. You go out after your own goals. You become responsible for your own success and happiness. Resentment doesn't fit into this picture, and because it doesn't it is a failure mechanism.

Habit of Self-Belief

Belief is the knowledge that we can do something.

It’s an inner feeling that we can accomplish the things we desire and decide to achieve. When you believe in yourself, you gain power and your eyes open to opportunities that lead to greatness.

To achieve high levels of success and achievement, you must believe you can and will succeed. Everything is possible for you if you believe in yourself and your potential for succeed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right!”
                                                                                                                        -- Henry Ford
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your thoughts can be positive and filled with belief, or they can be negative and filled with disbelief. Either way, your mind will convince you to succeed and achieve, or to fail.

Have confidence in yourself and your ability to become more and achieve more than you already have. Confidence and self belief are like muscles that have to be exercised and
used to become stronger.

“Believe you can and you are halfway there.”

-- Theodore Roosevelt

Fill your mind with thoughts of succes and victory and there will be no room for thoughts
of failure and defeat. Surround yourself with people that support and encourage you to go
for it versus the naysayers that fill your mind with fear and doubt.

See it…Believe it…and you will Achieve it!

Health & Fitness Tip: Think Fitness with a Purpose!

Martial Arts training is a very purposeful way to get in shape and stay in shape.

The movements you practice in class are a great way to stretch and strengthen your mind and body. The techniques and combinations improve your memory and develop your attention span.

The various offensive and defensive skills you practice are also an excellent way to develop and condition your range of motion. All while increasing your balance, coordination and overall physical condition.

Whenever you're working rounds of sparring, partner drills or pad and bag work, you're also
improving your cardiovascular endurance as well as your skill level.

All forms of Martial Arts training are good for you, each has it's one way of becoming the
Ultimate Fitness with a Purpose.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope your training is going well and you're feeling stronger than ever. Traditionally, one of the best things about September is that most people are coming back from Summer break
and are ready to get back in top shape. Eager to have some structure back in their life.

Soaring in September creates a positive momentum for your training as you prepare for the
Final Four Months of the year. The next 60-90 days will either have you in great shape
going into your Holiday Season or you'll be fat and flabby.

The choice is yours...I hope you'll join me in making the Final Four the best of the year.

Kids Martial Arts Class
"the class is too big"

For anyone that has thought that or said that during any of our classes over the last two weeks I may have very well agreed with them, if I had not at one time consistently and  successfully taught rocking classes of 20-30 kids with little to no help and if I had not witness many classes of 30-50 kids of all ages and all ranks taught SUCCESSFULLY by an instructor with little or no help.

For myself, for ourselves and to better help our dojo families it is important to realize that unless someone has had these experiences, the first thing most people think of is "the class is too big."

Don't get me wrong, I would say we have had a few classes that have been far from optimal, but I not only believe, but know that the problem is not how many kids are in class, but the structure of the class.

I would be a fool to think that we could teach the "Kids Martial Arts Class" the same as we taught the previous classes. It has been at least 3 years since I taught a kids class of this size, so I knew it would be a transition with a few rough edges to smooth out. Sensei Tye and I have to re-familiarize ourselves with the structures and teaching methods that are successful with this type of group, and then pass those on to our assistants.

In any class I look at anything and everything, good and not so good, as feedback on how we can get better. After Wednesday's class I really took a hard look at this and dug deep to revive those structures and teaching methods that were so successful.

Everything I came up with I put into tonight's class and WOW. FUN. FOCUS. STRUCTURE. ENERGY. EXCITEMENT! The kid's LOVED it! The parents RAVED about it.YES!

I look forward to doing this on a consistent basis.

"The choice is yours. You hold the tiller. You can steer the course; you choose in the direction of where you want to be - today, tomorrow, or in a distant time to come."

-- W. Clement Stone, businessman and author

Think of the smartest person you know or know of.  Or, think of a person you know of that is the most skilled/successful in some area of life.

Any area of life where they are just incredible.

Sports, career, health, hobby, relationships, music, arts, any area.

Keep in mind that they weren't always as skilled as they are now.  It took time.  Lots of it.

And even now, keep in mind also that they don't always do
everything right.

They make mistakes.

Wrong decisions.

But since they're very skilled now, they must have taken the hundreds and thousands of mistakes and decisions that didn't go their way and learned from them in order to get as good as they are now.

Right?

That doesn't mean that they are now perfect; it just means that they've learned more than just about anyone else in the thing they are good at.

If they didn't, they wouldn't be as good as they are now.

Right?

This reminds me... what do they call the businesses that doctors and lawyers run?

They are called medical practices and law practices.

EVERY business or profession is really a practice, frankly.

Because as the sun sets each day, we all make mistakes and enjoy successes.  And in both there are lessons to be learned.

When you learn them, you grow and become more valuable... more valuable to yourself and to everyone you come in contact with.

Hmmmm.

That's a pretty good thing to remember when you've made a bunch of mistakes and said or did some things that got you in trouble, even if you've made a habit out of screwing up.

As long as you recognize your mistakes, take ownership of them quickly, look for the lessons in each and every one of them and remember the lessons.

When you are constantly looking to learn valuable skills every single day of your life, you will make your mark in this world.

It is only when you are learning something new from every failure and every success that you will get smarter, more skilled and more successful at doing everything you do.

Right again?

Sounds pretty simple, huh?

It's not.  It takes attention and discipline. But, as a martial artist, isn’t that two of the most important qualities that you must have?

As we learn through our PRACTICE, we pass what we learn onto our students and the many people who are exposed to our work through our teaching of martial arts and life skills.

Why not give it a try?

Self-Esteem
In psychology, self-esteem reflects a person's overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth.
(...)

Synonyms or near-synonyms of self-esteem include: self-worth, self-regard, self-respect, self-love (which can express overtones of self-promotion), self-integrity. Self-esteem is distinct from self-confidence and self-efficacy, which involve beliefs about ability and future performance.

8/30/2009 30 day raw organic diet

On 8/25/2009 I completed a 30 day raw organic diet. It was a great exercise in facing your cravings head on. I have a much deeper awareness of differnce betwee actual hunger, conditioned cravings from the food industry, and stress cravings. It was a lesson in creativity. I found many ways to satisfy those cravings with a variety of healthy foods. It was a lesson in debunking the calories in = calories out myth. Anyone that is around me long enough realizes that 30 day raw organic diet.or not, I tend to eat about 4-5 thousand calories per day. Even though I ate that many calories, I dropped 10 pounds in 30 days because the food was raw and organic.  I have also realized that at this point I would not want to make this strict diet my lifestyle. I feel much better making that about 80% of my eating habits and being good with other foods in moderation.

Habit of Staying Focused!

Champions in the Martial Arts, in Sports and great Leaders in the Military, Business and in Politics tend to have the ability to stay focused on their primary goals and objectives for longer periods of time than most people.

Average people are easily distracted and tend to lack focus.

THIS ISN'T YOU. Highly successful people are focused achievers and are able to keep their eye on doing what needs to be done without allowing anything to interfere. UFC fighters are considered to be modern day Warriors. They must keep themselves in top shape year round and ready to enter into battle in the Octagon.

This type of training and preparation requires enormous effort, sacrifice and long periods of staying FOCUSED.

It’s not much different than the type of focus and training required of our military. The soldiers that protect our freedom must stay very focused during training and especially during active duty. Their lives may depend on it and the success of their mission as well.

Staying focused requires regular training and conditioning.

Learning to stay focused for longer periods of time can be practiced and developed in many ways. You can start by adding 5-10 minutes on any activities that require focus. Extend your cardio sessions by an extra 5-10 minutes, increase your daily reading by 5-10 minutes, etc…

Little by little, you’ll find that you can sustain your focus and concentration for longer periods of time. Another exercise is to catch yourself whenever you lose your focus and analyze what makes you lose your focus.

What distracts you and knocks you off track?

Once you identify what distracts you, eliminate or minimize the distractions from your life.

Become more aware of times you are able to stay focused and identify why.

Soon you’ll be in the Habit of Staying Focused.

Health & Fitness Tip "To remain a Champion...you must fight like a Challenger!"

Great quote that simply states that you've got to stay hungry if you want to keep getting better. This is true in your Martial Arts and Fitness goals as well as every other aspect of your life. Have you ever ran into an old friend that was once in decent shape only to see that they have really let themselves get way out of shape?

Let's face it...it isn't always easy to stay focused and fired up.

However, it's easier to stay in shape than it is to allow yourself to get out of shape and
then work to get back in shape. Sometimes people get injured, sick or just fall off track.

Other times they celebrate life a little too much and feed their hunger with overindulgence.

Unfortunately, this lifestyle isn't in the best interest of your overall health and well being.

Staying in top shape year round requires staying hungry like a challenger on the climb.

It's been said that a little success can sometimes prevent a lot of success.

There are times that people experience success in their goals and then they stop doing what it took to achieve success the first time around. The good news for everyone is that if you did it before you can do it over and over again.

Live life as a Champion...stay hungry and stay motivated like a Challenger!

How did we get so lucky?

I hope your August has been awesome and your ready to Soar in September...
